Costa AP Art Students Prepare for Portfolio Submission

Role
Executive Features Editor

Costa’s AP Art class is currently preparing for their AP Art test, in which they virtually hand over 15 art pieces to AP graders for their grade on this unconventional exam. Artists choose a specific theme, such as human impact on nature, culture and ethnicity, social pressures, and almost anything else they want to create art about, and submit ten pieces that connect to this theme.

Artists are graded on technical skill, complexity of chosen theme, connection between art medium and chosen theme, as well as a writing portion about how each piece represents their chosen theme. They also select five other works to submit that show off exceptional technical skill, but do not necessarily connect to their theme.

Ms. Heredia, the AP Art teacher, aids her students in finding a theme that they have an emotional connection to and feel they can create meaningful work for, as well as teaching technical execution to her students.

As of Tuesday, March 24th, Costa has received the California Exemplary Arts Education Award, celebrating the notable achievements and skills of AP Art teachers and students, as one of the state’s highest honors in arts education.

On April 24th, from 6–8 PM, Costa will be holding the annual visual arts exhibit at Resin Gallery. This exhibit will feature works from all Costa art classes.
